Is there a notorious problem with putting snow chains on the ford flex?

A friend of mine couldn't put chains on a ford flex rental, due to the flex's low fender clearance and risk of the chains possibly cutting the brake lines. Any documentation of this via recall or etc?Is there a notorious problem with putting snow chains on the ford flex? The owners manual states that if you have 20 inch wheels you shouldn't use chains, if you have the smaller wheels you can use chains on the front wheels only.

Lots of the newer cars you cannot put chains on because of no fender clearance. If you do it will tear up the fenders, inner fenders or steering/brake components.............md
