How do I tell what kind of engine is in my ford truck?

Its a 1973 Ford F-100. A guy told me that I had a 360 in the truck but I am wanting to put a new engine in the truck but I dont know if its a big block or small block. How can I tell what size the motor and how do i see if its a big block or small block?How do I tell what kind of engine is in my ford truck?the a 360 is a big block, and differs from the small block 302 and 351 by the manifold, the 360 intake manifold is huge and goes under the valve cover to form part of the head as on all FE series engines,



when referring to a partial engine as when buying, long block is with heads and short block is without heads..

Write down the vin number and call an auto parts store. they should be able to bring it up and tell you. Why do you want a new engine - rebuild what you have. If you have a 360 (aka 361), or a 390 - you could put in a built 390 or 428 easily. If you have a 302, a 331 or 347 stroker kit would provide a big boost in torque.

Go to carfax.com and enter the vin# and it might tell you what kind of engine it has. Are you sure the guy said it was a "360"? I think 360's are in a Dodge. Are you sure he didn't mean a "460"?
